Arctic Haboob: Dust Storm Sweeps Over Colorado – NBCNews.com
A passenger on a plane passing over Colorado captured this stunning aerial view of a dust storm on Monday. Amanda Wicks took the photo during a flight from Los Angeles to Chicago.
The Weather Channel explained that the dust storm – properly known as a haboob – was kicked up by high winds following behind the arctic front that is bringing cold temperatures to much of the country. A haboob is a type of intense dust storm carried on an atmospheric gravity current. Haboobs occur regularly in arid regions throughout the world.
