Marijuana may be legal to buy in Colorado and Washington State, but for tourists, it’s hard to find a place to enjoy it. Smoking marijuana in public is illegal. Hotels and restaurants are generally smoke-free. The desire to circumvent these restrictions along with visitors’ curiosity around how marijuana is cultivated and processed, has given rise to a growing Cannabis Tourism industry. Small businesses are connecting travelers with marijuana shopping expeditions, visits to growers, lodging in pot-friendly hotels, and opportunities to consume the product. Other entrepreneurs are creating cannabis cooking classes, spa treatments and pot-smoking airport layovers.
Recreational sales of Marijuana became legal in 2014 in Colorado and Washington State, and the decriminalization is attracting visitors. Hotels.com found that Denver hotel searches went up 73% compared to the year before, for the Marijuana festival weekend of April 2014, the first to be held following legalization of marijuana sales. Michael Gordon, co-founder of Seattle’s Kush Tours says almost all his guests come from out of state, half coming specifically for a marijuana experience and the other half adding it to an already-planned trip. His tours visit a glass pipe blower, Marijuana-growing nursery, testing facility, and cannabis retailer.

Eddie Peltier of Atlanta came to Seattle to experience the legal marijuana scene for his winter vacation, “I had seen one or two plants before,” he said of his Kush Tour, “but to see the hundreds at the grower was amazing.”
Gordon, says he is modeling his tourist offerings on Napa Valley Wineries and sees himself as an ambassador for the nascent legal marijuana industry, hoping to help develop connoisseurs. “We want to show off the growers and educate people about what they are consuming,” he said. His tours bring small groups to visit Sky High Gardens, a marijuana growing operation in Seattle.
As the industry grows, Mr. Gordon hopes consumers will end up knowing “the difference between the Sativa and Indica strains of marijuana, in the same way they know a Chardonnay from a Merlot.”
