Thaddeus Cheyenne Murphy, 44 (Provided by the Colorado Department of Corrections)A Colorado Springs man has been arrested in connection with an explosion last month near an NAACP office. Thaddeus Murphy, 44, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of arson and being a felon in possession of firearms, according to a U.S. Justice Department news release Friday. He is scheduled to be in federal court in Denver on Friday afternoon. Murphy allegedly ignited a road flare and pipe bomb near a container of gasoline on Jan. 6 in the 600 block of El Paso Street, according to investigators. Initially, federal and local investigators keyed in on a NAACP office in the building as the target, but the civil rights organization was not the target, according to the release. Murphy told federal investigators ” the target of his criminal actions was not the NAACP, but that he had a different motive.” Instead, the target was an accountant who works out of the same building and had done tax work for Murphy in the past, according to a criminal complaint filed with the federal court. Murphy has had to declare bankruptcy, the complaint said, and he was trying to get past tax records from the accountant, Steve Dehaven. “Murphy believed Dehaven destroyed his tax records,” according to the complaint. “Murphy stated that he ‘flipped out’ because of his financial problems.” Murphy was initially connected to the case by “witnesses who described a specific type of truck and an individual fleeing the scene,” according to the release. The explosive device did not ignite the gasoline when it was lit, but it did knock items off office walls and charred the side of the building. No one was injured. Duct tape was used in making the bomb and investigators found brown dog hair on remnants of tape in the debris field. As investigators closed in on the suspect, they determined that Murphy does own a brown dog, the complaint said.
