At the end of the Denver Broncos‘ 2014 campaign, GM and Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway made it clear that he thought quarterback Peyton Manning had one more good year in him. However, there’s a decent change that Elway goes back on his word before March 10 rolls around.
On March 10, the start of the NFL‘s new league year, Manning’s 2015 salary becomes guaranteed. The future Hall of Famer is set to make $19 million this upcoming season, but must pass a physical before he can collect that money and solidify his spot on the roster. According to Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole, his passing the physical is not a foregone conclusion.
“Ultimately the final decision about whether he plays in Denver next season is up to the Broncos and, really, up to John Elway,” Cole said. “At this point in his career, the Broncos could fail Manning for any reason… there’s a big question here about whether the Broncos want to bring him back for one more year…”
Now it seems crazy to think that the Broncos would fail Manning, and it is crazy.
Do they really think that untested Brock Osweiler could do better than an aging Manning? Perhaps, but that would be a huge gamble at best. Manning has had an entire offseason to rest and recuperate his body, so the problems he had towards the end of the 2014 season have likely subsided for the time being.
