The Rockies have demoted the man who was supposed to be the ace of their staff to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Jon Gray, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2013 MLB Draft, has been sent down after going 7-7 with a 5.77 ERA in 17 starts for Colorado.

The 26-year-old had given up 108 hits in 92 innings this season as opponents were batting .287 against him.

Only Dallas Keuchel of the Astros and Jason Hammel of the Royals have allowed more hits this season than Gray, and the former Oklahoma Sooner has pitched two fewer innings than Hammel and 10 less than Keuchel.

The Rockies recalled outfielder Raimel Tapia to take Gray’s spot on the 25-man roster.
